I am a relatively new Yorkie mom, and my puppy has begun to lose hair on her flanks. I noticed the hair loss around the time she went into her first heat. The loss was minimal on her hind legs and since there were no signs of any skin irritation or fleas, I decided to wait a bit before taking her to the vet. I took her 3 weeks ago, and upon examination the vet could not determine any skin problems that would explain the hair loss. No redness, itching or fungus - he checked with a black light. She has not been scratching and there is no evidence of fleas. I see no flea dirt and when I combed her with a flea comb have found nothing. Her fur on her back has also started to become coarse. The vet believes it may be hormone related since it began around the time she went into heat. He has recommended giving her 3mg of Melatonin twice a day. Said he successfully treated another Yorkie with the same symptoms. Has anyone else had this problem, or had any success with this protocol?
Thank you for any insight you may provide! |

It will be necessary, through trial and error, perhaps with the help of your ... Sue is a semi-retired grandmother of one, and a mother of 3 grown children.
